American Legion Auxiliary Unit 521

P.O. 5362, Pasadena, TX 77508

February 5, 2022

Dear American Legion Family:

For the past two years Unit 521 in Pasadena has had to cancel their Annual Cancer Research Dinner and fundraiser due to the CoVid virus, but this year we have resumed our program, and we are extending an invitation to all members of the American Legion Family to attend.

The Annual Cancer Research Dinner will be held Friday, February 18, 2022, at American Legion Post 521 located at

2221 Preston, Pasadena, TX 77503. Dinner will be from 5:00 pm-6:30pm. Ticket cost for the dinner is $15.00.

Dinner tickets may be purchased in advance by sending your check made payable to ALA Unit 521 to PO Box 5362, Pasadena, TX 77508, to reserve your place, or can be paid at the door. If you plan to attend advance notice will be greatly appreciated so we will know how much food to prepare. The deadline to notify me is February 11, 2022.

Please call, text, (713-419-9518) or email (carlene@flash.net) me your intention to attend the dinner.

The menu is Chicken Fettucine Alfredo or Shrimp Fettucine Alfredo, served with Salad, garlic bread, dessert, and drink.

Please advise which entrée you prefer when you advise us of your attendance.

Following the dinner there will be a special program from 6:30-7:30pm to recognize and honor cancer survivors and memorialize the special people in your life who did not survive this dreaded disease. Special luminaries with enclosed candles will be “lit” in their honor or memory as each person’s name is called. Following the ceremony, you will be able to take the luminary bag with your loved one’s name on it with you if you should desire to do so. The donation per luminary candle is $5 each, and all proceeds from the luminaries and the dinner will go direct to our ALA Department Cancer Research Program. Anyone may purchase luminaries and have their loved one’s name read during the program or they may make donations direct to our Cancer Research Program with checks made payable to ALA Unit 521, earmarked Cancer Research. We encourage you to share this information with other members, friends, relatives, and anyone you feel may be interested in joining us for the dinner or sponsoring a luminary. To honor a loved one with a luminary please print your name, the honorees name and whether you are honoring them or memorializing them on a separate sheet of paper, enclose your check with a donation of $5 for each luminary and mail to ALA Unit 521, PO Box 5362, Pasadena, TX 77508.

We are very excited to share with you that our Department President Teresa Copeland will be attending as our special guest. We would love to have you and your members come out and help us give her a great welcome to our part of Texas. Other special guests attending will be our Department Cancer Research Chairman Sharon Phelps, and National Executive Committeewoman Christine Trahan. Please let me know if you have any questions. You may send an email RSVP back to me along with your choice of meals to carlene@flash.net or call/text me @ 713-419-9518.

Best regards,

Carlene Ashworth, Secretary

The YES Charter Elementary School Blanket Project in Houston was set up at the request of the Dept of Texas Sons of the American Legion. The state SAL Commander, Tom Arista, received a phone call from the National SAL Commander asking Texas to adopt this project of furnishing 300 blankets for the children at this school who were mostly underprivileged and homeless.  Posts, Units, & SAL Squadrons all over Texas contributed funds, including $100 from Auxiliary Unit 521 to purchase the blankets.  The blanket orders, which totaled over $1000, were coordinated by Beaumont Unit 33 President Christine Trahan, and all blankets were shipped to Carlene Ashworth’s home for a holding place until they could be delivered.  The blankets were delivered to the school on November 6. In attendance at the school was Natl SAL Vice Commander Juan Torres, Post 472 Houston; Auxiliary Dept President Teresa Copeland, Unit 137, McAllen; Texas Auxiliary National Executive Committee Woman Christine Trahan, Beaumont Unit 33,  Past National President Carlene Ashworth, Unit 521; ALA Unit 521 President Maria Holmes and other members of the 8th, 22nd, and 2nd Districts.
Auxiliary Unit 521 once again participated in the semi annual Community Food Drive by setting up a collection box in the lobby of the Post for non perishable food drop off during the month of November. The collected food from members of the Post and Unit was valued at approximately $300. It was delivered to Pasadena City Hall on November 22 by Unit President Maria Holmes & Secretary Carlene Ashworth.
At the same time of the food drop off about ten boxes of various household items and men’s clothing was donated to Jackson Intermediate School’s  Wildcat Jamboree Christmas program. Families of the students attending the school could shop for free taking any items they may need or want during this program held at the school.

The DeGeorge at Union Station works with veterans to help identify mental and physical health issues, and locates service providers and treatment options. The DeGeorge gives veterans access to a number of basic services.

A single room occupancy facility, meaning each resident has their own room with a bed, dresser, desk, small bathroom, microwave and mini-frig. The vets share a small community kitchen.

On Dec 4 several members of Unit 521 delivered Christmas trees and Christmas gifts to the DeGeorge Hotel which houses over 100 formerly homeless veterans. Auxiliary members played bingo with the residents and provided snacks and prizes for them. Coordinating this event was chairman Yolanda Guerra and helpers were Fran Conklin, Mary Ellen Tucker
